Albert J. Nordlund, 99, former longtime resident of Sturgeon Township, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2017, at the Cook Care Center.
He was born on October 24, 1917, at Chisholm, the son of Gust and Fanny (Mattila) Nordlund. He grew up (Myer's Location) near Chisholm and moved with his family to Alango in 1929, where he lived until his marriage to Sylvia Nordlund on September 19, 1942 in Chisholm. The couple settled in Sturgeon Township, where he logged, operated a sawmill and engaged in general farming for nearly 60 years. He also worked in the mines for 25 years, for Pittsburg-Pacific and the J & L Mine.
He was a member of the Unitarian Church. Albert was a member of the Northern Farmers Coop and active in the community. Albert served on the Sturgeon Township Volunteer Fire Department and belonged to the senior citizens group first in Balkan, then later in Cook where he served as president. Albert was a dedicated delegate for the Seniors Federation for District #5. After Sylvia had two strokes, he moved to the Pioneer Building in Cook, to be near her at the Cook Nursing Home. Albert and Sylvia were inseparable. In the earlier years he liked to hunt, and enjoyed the yearly ritual of the family going fishing on Pelican Lake. He also enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles and playing cards, especially solitaire.
He is preceded in death by his wife Sylvia on July 25, 2004; 1 daughter, Judy Flemino on Oct. 5, 2005; 2 brothers, Reino and Bill Nordlund; and 3 sisters, Laina Autio, Laila Roine and Bertha Nettle.
Albert is survived by 1 son, James (Althea) Nordlind of Malvern, Arkansas; 1 daughter, Joanne (Steve) Balliette of Duluth; 5 Grandchildren: Jake, Shana, Jeremy, Jessica and Caitlin, along with special great grandchildren.
SERVICES:
Per Albert's request, no formal services will be held. Burial will be in the Alango Cemetery next summer. Arrangements are with the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.
