Alice
Wakemup
Jul 3, 1948 — Nov 6, 2024
Alice Mary Wakemup, aka "Allie," 76, of Nett Lake, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 just 4 days after her son Dana's passing. She was born July 03, 1948 to John and Mabel (Soreyes) Wakemup. She grew up at Nett Lake and went to school in Nett Lake and Orr High School. Allie had seven brothers and sisters along with her parents who all preceded her in death. She had six children, Carolyn, Charlie, Dana, Toni, Daniel, and David, along with many grandchildren and great children.
Alice lived in Minneapolis and Duluth most of her life where she was employed as a teacher's aide and did volunteer work with various charities. She was a free spirit who enjoyed walking the hills of Duluth and traveling with the Elders to the Grand Canyon with her sister, Marge, and the nieces and nephews who accompanied them on that trip. The experience of going to the casinos in Las Vegas and staying overnight there was quite memorable for Alice. Another memorable and meaningful traveling experience was going to the Black Hills with her brother, Roger, during which they pretended to be real western characters in the long-ago wild west.
Alice also had a fun spirit and enjoyed playing cards, cribbage and Yahtzee with her family and friends. Alice enjoyed being at the family reunions and dinners held annually since the 1980's. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends and will be missed for her hearty laughter and lively personality when she was in a good mood.
Alice enjoyed honoring her Native heritage by beading beautiful earrings and other jewelry. She learned how to make fry bread at a young age and was famous for her fry bread at San Marcos, where she lived for a long time in Duluth. She was awarded a certificate for "Best Fry Bread." Everyone loved her fry bread.
Allie will be missed greatly as she was the last living link to the rest of our direct ancestors. Nevertheless, she will be joining the rest of her family along with her son, Dana.
Giiga wabamin miinawaa, mother, grandmother, aunt.
The wake and service will be held at the same time as Dana's.
