Obituary

Alvin Melvin LaValla, Kebetogama, passed away on December 30, 2017 at his home. Alvin was born to Raymond and Ellen (McGuire) LaValla on October 20, 1924 in McDougal Township. He was united in marriage to Jennie Albrecht on May 4, 1945 in Little Falls, MN. Al worked for Mando before becoming self-employed. He retired in 1984. He also belonged to the Kabetogama Volunteer Fire Department.

Alvin had a great love for the outdoors, whether it be just walking in the woods, hunting, fishing or working for loggers. His life work was in the woods, cutting trees or driving pulp truck. He was also a wonderful teacher of the outdoors to his four children. It was an adventure to be at his side during a walk in the woods. His love for animals led him to having chickens in his later years, as well as dogs, pigs, cows and horses throughout the years. His favorite thing to do was to sit in the chicken coop and talk to his little chicks. Chores for him were feeding the deer, birds, rabbits, and squirrels. He often told visitors of the "pet" weasel he had in the house. The weasel would come daily and wait for his hamburger hand out. Another passion he had was for his grandchildren. He loved to talk and visit with them, telling them stories of his growing up on the farm and all the hunting stories. He always had time to listen and give advice to them. A man of many trades he also enjoyed wood working. Give him an idea and he gave you a memory, because he gave most of his projects proudly away. Alvin was never an idle man. In his younger years, he was a fabulous dancer; watching he and mom on the dance floor was magical. He loved country music.

Those who welcome him with open arms are his father and mother, Ray and Ellen LaValla; brothers: Basil; Marvin; Leroy; Alfred; and Vernon; sister and brother-in-law: Evelyn and Clarence Pederson; sisters-in-law: Hazel and Shirley; brother-in-law: John Norquist.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years: Jennie; and his children: Pat (Rocky) Lehto; Ellen (Gary) Fredericks; Les (Suna) LaValla; and Debbie LaValla; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters: Loretta (Henry) Voll; Kathy Baie; and Carol Norquist; brother Lloyd (Gretchen) LaValla; and sisters-in-law: Floretta and JoAnn.

Per Alvin's wishes there will be no funeral service. The family will have a celebration of his life later this summer. To leave an online condolence visit www.mlakerfuneralhome.com
