Barry "Tyke" Porter

Barry "Tyke" Porter, "Gay-na-wa-Ba-mind"(One Who Watches) 47, Nett Lake, passed away at St. Luke's Hospital on Wednesday, February 4, 2014.

He was born on June12, 1967 in Cook to Harry D. and Mary (Goggleye) Porter. He grew up in Nett Lake, where he lived most of his life. He served in the US Army Reserves from 1985 to 1993 and was dedicated member of the Bois Forte Honor Guard. He belonged to the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa. Tyke was employed in maintenance first with the Nett Lake School, then Bois Forte Housing, and most recently with the Bois Forte Tribal Government. He took pride in his cleaning and in all the positions he held. Tyke was on the Bois Forte Volunteer Fire Department since its inception in 1992 and previously served at its Fire Chief.
Tyke enjoyed attending wrestling matches and collected wrestling memorabilia. He also collected monster truck and monster memorabilia and hot wheels. He liked camping and spending time with his friends. He will be sadly missed by many.

He is preceded in death by his father, Harry Porter Sr.; 3 brothers, Dion, Lance and Brian Porter; and his grandparents: Harry & Jennie Porter and Jess & Madeline Goggleye.

Tyke is survived by his mother, Mary Porter of Nett Lake; 2 brothers, Gerald "Turk" (Jeneal) Goggleye of Nett Lake and Harry (Janet) Porter of Virginia; 1 sister, Becky Acevedo of Minneapolis and numerous other special relatives and friends.

SERVICES; Traditional Services will be at 10:00 AM Sunday (Feb. 8, 2015) at the Bois Forte Government Center, where the visitation will begin after 5:00 PM Saturday.
The Spiritual Leader will be Gilbert Smith and the Spiritual Advisor Gene Goodsky. The casket bearers will be: Ernie Barto, Adrian "Nuke" Jones, Mike Connor, Shane Drift, Allan "Buzz" Connor and Vernon Connor. The honorary casket bearer will be: Jerry, Robbie and Amanda Goggleye, Brian, Sam, Jessie, Monica, Kerie, and James Porter and Jordan, Keenan, Brandon and Christian Acevedo, along with all of Tyke's relatives. Military honors will be accorded by the honor guards of Bois Forte, Orr American Legion and Cook VFW. Interment will be in the Bois Forte Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are with Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.
