Bertha Maria Hennessy, age 94, former resident of Alango, MN, died in Los Angeles on October 10, 2017. She was born in Sturgeon, Minnesota on July 1, 1923 and went to school in Alango. After high school, at age 19 she left for California on her own. She worked putting rivets in bomber aircraft doors during World War II and put in hundreds of rivets per day. She was married to James Hennessy, then divorced. She brought Hollywood glamour back to Minnesota on her visits back. She was preceded in death by her father Nestor Vainio, her mother Amanda (Lagerspetz) Vainio, her brother Arne Vainio and her sister Helmi (Vainio) Nordlund. She is survived by her nephew Arne Vainio, M.D. of Duluth, nephew Brandon Vainio of Esko, niece Sherri Monroe of Duluth, second cousins Dale Lapakko of St. Louis Park, Mark Lapakko of Minneapolis, Kim Lapakko of St. Paul, Mayo (Lapakko) Hart of Minnetonka and her only living childhood friend Eleanor Phillips of Sturgeon, Minnesota. She was cremated in Los Angeles and her memorial service will be at the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook, Minnesota on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 1:00 PM with a burial following at the Alango cemetery. In lieu of gifts, she would want you to simply love your families.
