Dexter Warren Straw, 69, of Cook, MN passed away on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at the Cook Hospital with his daughter Renee by his side.
Dexter was born to Charles and Amy (Heinonen) Straw on February 1, 1949, in Brownington, Missouri. Dexter attended school in Brownington, MO, then after moving to MN, he attended school in Alango and Cook. He joined the Marine Corps and served in the Vietnam War, receiving multiple awards including a purple heart. Dexter was a talented person who wore many hats. He was a bush pilot in Alaska, and a commercial fisherman on the Bering Sea. He also worked as a Union Iron worker and a carpenter building his own home which he was so proud of. He was a game warden in Pine City and Baudette areas. His last working adventure was completing brush contracts. This allowed him to be back in the woods. Dexter enjoyed Northern Minnesota and everything it had to offer. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and trapper. He loved his family and friends, and special pals Champ & Bud Weiser.
Dexter was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents; his parents; his soulmate Lynette (Cricket) Hakkila; a grandson Tanner Mollberg; and brothers Dennis Straw and Charles Straw.
Dexter is survived by his daughters: Renee Walker and Lynn "Dolly" Hakkila (Bob); three grandchildren: Erin Mollberg, Jimmy Walker, and Jackson Walker; brother Dalton Straw (Delayne); nephews: Robert Straw (Mandy), Jeff Straw (Kirbie), and Greg Straw (Kim); nieces Kyanne Burris and Stephanie Straw; a special family member Ronald "Dupo" Hakkila (Carmelle); extended family members Todd Fitzgerald and Jay Fitzgerald; and numerous cousins & special friends.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 26, 2018 at 2:00 PM at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Angora, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Military Honors will be accorded by Cook VFW Post #1757 and the Orr American Legion Honor Guard #480. To leave an online condolence visit www.mlakerfuneralhome.com
