Obituary

Elisabeth "Elsa" Glassl Crego

Elisabeth "Elsa" Glassl Crego, 94, of Ash Lake passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth.

Elisabeth was born on March 9, 1923 at Lobs, Czechoslovakia, the daughter of Josef and Hedwig Glassl. In her early years she worked as a tailor. She met her husband Charles Crego while he was serving in the Army in Germany during the Korean conflict. They were united in marriage in Germany.  After Charles was honorably discharged from the service, they settled to Ash Lake, Charles' home area, where they lived for almost 60 years.  Charles was employed for the Duluth-Winnipeg-Pacific Railway, retiring after 40 years of  dedicated service.  Elsa also planted trees and worked DWP Railway in Ranier for a time.  She was proud to become a US citizen, and what it truly meant to her.  Elisabeth was a devoted homemaker, taking pride in raising her 5 children.  Elsa enjoyed baking, cooking, canning, gardening, blueberries picking and anything to do with the outdoors. She liked to keep busy. Elsa was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and in her earlier years cleaned and helped serve  luncheons there.  She had a very strong faith, and passed it down to her children.

She and Charles loved living on Ash Lake. She was a dedicated wife,  loving and warm mother and grandmother, and one who had a sincere care for all the wildlife.

She is preceded in death by her husband Charles on March 22, 2012; 2 sisters, Frieda Radler and Alosia Paulus;  and 1 brother, Karl Glassl.

Elisabeth is survived by her children: Lori (Robert) Hagberg and Julie Crego both of Hibbing, Peter (Mary) Crego of Maple Grove, MN, Chuck (Diane) Crego of Hibbing and Brent (Evelyn) Crego of Miami, FL; 1 sister: Julie Dunsser of Munich, Germany; 9 grandchildren, Elisabeth, Alan and David Hagberg, Travis and Jennifer Crego, Christie (Dewey) Crego Ritter, and Adam, Cassie and Chelsea Crego; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.
