Eugene "Gene" Harold Jenkins, age 96 of Cook, Minnesota passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.
Gene was born on December 14, 1926 to Harold and Mildred (Arthur) Jenkins in Winterset, Iowa. He attended school in Corning, Iowa and the University of Minnesota where he graduated with a teaching degree in Industrial Arts. Gene was an Army Air Force veteran serving 4 plus years combined active and reserve duty. Gene married the love of his life, Marilyn Nylund, on June 9, 1950 and resided in Mankato, Minnesota.
Gene began teaching in Heron Lake, Minnesota. In 1966 he moved his family to accept a new teaching opportunity at Faribault Senior High School where he taught Industrial Arts and Construction Trades. He also coached and refereed basketball, football and golf. He was well liked and respected by students and faculty alike. Gene retired from teaching in 1982.
Soon after retiring, Gene and Marilyn became full time residents on Lake Vermilion where he was a well-known, longtime fishing guide. He and Marilyn enjoyed several years traveling, including an Alaskan cruise, trip to Central Europe, and wintering in several Southern states. Gene enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing with his family. He also enjoyed woodworking, and was an accomplished wood carver.
Gene was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Heron Lake, Our Saviors Lutheran Church of Faribault, and Trinity Lutheran Church of Cook. He was a faithful supporter of ministry, youth, and vacation bible school, in addition to numerous charities.
Gene was a strong family man, follower and servant of our Lord Jesus Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Mildred; daughter Patti Jo Knoer; sister Carol Freidrichs, and in-laws John and Claire Nylund.
Gene is survived by his loving wife Marilyn of 73 years; sons Michael (Nancy) Jenkins; Scott (Martine) Jenkins, and David (Lorri) Jenkins; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday, October 21, 2023. Visitation at 10:00 am, service at 11:00 am with lunch following.
