John Robert
Poczekaj
Mar 10, 1943 — Jan 12, 2020
John R Poczekaj of Orr, Mn. passed away on January 12, 2020 at his home.
John was born on March 10, 1943 in Chicago, Il. to John and Ferol Poczekaj. John served in the US Army in the early sixties. John was united in marriage to Eileen Wulf on September 24, 1966. They were blessed with 53 wonderful years together.
After his time in the US army John worked as a butcher in Chicago and then his career path led him into telecommunications. He worked for Illinois Bell Telephone for ten years and then other communication businesses. In his last five years before retirement John operated his own telecommunication company.
Upon retiring John and Eileen moved to their lake home on Pelican Lake in Orr Mn. where they enjoyed 17 years together as retirees.
If you knew John you knew he loved to fish. You also knew he loved to fly. He was a private pilot with his own plane and was always eager to give someone an aerial tour of Pelican Lake. He also loved to golf and excelled at telling jokes. He loved to travel, have fun and eat out. You also knew never to call before ten in the morning. John was a night owl.
John liked people and would talk to everyone and always remembered names. He also enjoyed small town life. He was a member of Holy Cross Church in Orr, sang in the church choir and was an usher. He was a Leiding Township Supervisor, on the Board of the Pelican Lakeshore Owners Association, active on the Arrowhead Concert Association board, a former DNR firearm safety instructor, an Orr Lion's Club member and for many years a volunteer bus driver for the Vince Shute Bear Sanctuary.
He is survived by his wife Eileen; his sister Ferol Jones of Franklin Park, Il; his sister in law Norma (Chuck) Sofie of Baribou, Wi, brother in law Robert (Linda) Wulf of Stillwater, Mn.; numerous nieces and nephews and lifelong friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister in law Barbara Wulf and brother in law Leslie (Lori) Wulf.
