Josephine "Joey" P. Chavers
Josephine "Joey" P. Chavers, 94, Nett Lake passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2015 at her residence with family by her side. She was the beloved oldest resident of Nett Lake.
She was born on October 5, 1920 in Nett Lake the daughter of Edward and Annie (Lingletter) Porter. She was a lifelong resident of Nett Lake.
Joey was active all of her life and had worked as housing director for Bois Forte, volunteered driving for St. Louis County, served as deputy Tribal game warden, worked with the MN Extension Services, and Nett Lake Banung Crew. She also was a cook for the Elderly Nutrition Program in Nett Lake where she also held cooking classes. She was a member of Bois Forte Wild Rice Committee, Nett Lake Baptist Church and a member of the Bois Forte Chippewa Band. She enjoyed cleaning her yard, loved her plants and mountain ash trees, and cutting wood.
She is preceded in death by her children, Michael, Merle "Ike", Dale, and Charmaine Leecy, Carol Lumbar Isham , Janice Day, LaVelle Chavers; and granddaughter, Trina Marie Day.
Joey is survived by her children, Jeanne Ann Day, Jewel Day Walker, James Chavers Jr., William "Duze" Chavers and Edward (Cathy) Chavers, along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great -great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Thursday, (July 30th) at the Nett Lake Baptist Church, where visitation will be from 5:00 PM until midnight on Wednesday. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral. The officiant will be Rev. Kevin Land. Casket bearers will be her grandchildren: Eddie Chavers, Tim Chavers, Jimmy Holman, Damon Day, Chris Day and John M. Day. Honorary bearers will be Barry Day, Ronald "Dean" Day, Jessie Lundeen, Benjamin Chavers Sharp, Daniel Holman, Mitchell Chavers, Scotty Villebrun, Jamie Chavers Dorr, Greg Chavers Drift, Dave Chavers, Merle Leecy, Glen Marlow, Richard Steinbaugh, and Michael Damon Leecy. Burial will be held in the Bois Forte Cemetery, on the Bois Forte Reservation. Arrangements are with Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.
