Lawrence "Larry" R. Phillips
Lawrence "Larry" Raymond Phillips, 69 of Cook passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Duluth.
Larry was born on July 21, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois the son of Raymond and Eleanor (Alt) Phillips. At the age of 2, he moved with his family to Sturgeon Township, where he grew up. Larry attended grade school in Alango, transferred to Cook High School where he graduated in 1965, then attended Virginia Junior College. He lived in Alango for many years. He began his career in the automobile industry working with tires, engines and auto parts at Taconite Tire, Ray's Supply, Northern Engine, and Mathisen Tire. Larry started his automotive sales career in 1977 at Voyageurs Chevrolet in Cook, which later became Simonson Chevrolet. In 1988, Larry and his brother Lee purchased the dealership and renamed it Phillips Chevrolet. The brothers sold the dealership to the Waschke family in 2007. Larry married Crystal Jo Whitney on January 17, 1999. They have resided in Cook the past 17 years. Larry was still actively working at Waschke Family Chevrolet at the time of his passing. He was a longtime dedicated and knowledgeable auto salesman who loved his work. He made many lasting friendships through his car and truck sales. He enjoyed traveling and had the great fortune of seeing 49 states. He loved watching Minnesota Twins baseball. Larry will be greatly missed by family, friends and business associates.
He is preceded in death by his father, Raymond Phillips and one son Chris Phillips.
Larry is survived by his wife Crystal; 2 sons, Scott (Holly) Phillips of Alango, and Grant Phillips at home; his mother, Eleanor Phillips of Sturgeon Township; 2 brothers, Lee (Lynne) Phillips of Alango and Jay ( Sharon) Phillips of Hibbing; 2 grandchildren, Victoria and Brittany Phillips; mother-in-law, Deb (Randy) Kahn of Angora, father-in-law, Tracy (Kay) Whitney of Mapleton, MN; brother in law, Luke Whitney of Cook, along with nephews, nieces, cousins and many friends.
SERVICES: Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at the Alango Cemetery. Rev Jeff Schirle will be the officiant. After the service, a reception in Larry's honor will be held at the Cook VFW. Arrangements are with the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.
