Madonna J. Fischer
Madonna J. Fischer, 93, Lake Vermilion-Cook, passed away on Friday, June 10, 2016, at the Cook Care Center.
She was born Madonna Jean Smith on January 7, 1923, in Terre Haute, Indiana, to Edward and Margaret (Houston) Smith. She grew up in Terre Haute, where she graduated from high school and lived for many years. Madonna married Edward J. Fischer on May 7, 1943 in Terre Haute. Ed served 34 years in law enforcement- 20 years with the Terre Haute City Police Department, then chief deputy sheriff of Vigo County for nearly 15 years, retiring in 1982. Madonna worked for A & P food (Ann Page) in packaging, then retiring after 20 years of dedicated service with Columbia Records, making vinyl records. The family spent quality time vacationing on Lake Vermilion since 1960, then upon retirement in 1982, moved there permanently. Ed and Madonna enjoyed boating and fishing. They were both very active in the Senior Citizen's Center in Cook. She belonged to the Red Hat Society. Madonna was hospitable, a wonderful conversationalist and had a great wit and sense of humor. She was proud of her family and dearly loved them.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Edward J. Fischer on August 23, 1994; and 1 son, William "Bill" Fischer on April 27, 2008.
Madonna is survived by 1 son, Edward J. (Jeanne) Fischer of Terre Haute, IN; 4 grandchildren, William Fischer, Krystal (Warren) Berger, Jason (Angela) Fischer and Dr. Edward (Sara) Fischer; 6 great grandchildren, Tori, Riley, Lainey, Grant, Mallorey, and Case; along with nieces, nephews and friends.
SERVICES: Memorial Services will be 11:00 AM, Monday, June 20, 2016 at the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook. A gathering of family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service. Rev. Liz Cheney will be the officiant. Music will be provided by Pam Ruuska. A reception in Madonna's honor will be held at the Cook VFW after the service.
