Obituary

Marjorie Mae (Custer-Seinola) Menton was reunited with her departed loved ones on February 4, 2024 at Essentia Hospital in Duluth, MN. Her daughters were by her side as she made this final journey.

Margie entered the world on Wednesday, September 28, 1932 in Grand Rapids, MN.  She grew up in Sturgeon, MN, a small town outside of Cook, MN, where she spent her early years playing with her older brother and extended family, attending country school, and eating lard & sugar sandwiches for lunch. Her childhood taught her the value of family, hard work, and the importance of education.

After high school, Margie went on her first independent adventure- she moved to Minneapolis, MN and found employment at a bank. While living in Minneapolis, she met her future husband, Donald Menton. On June 16, 1951, they were married in Bear River, MN. Having had only one sibling, Margie dreamed of having a large family.   She was thrilled when she and Donald were able to build a house in Hibbing, MN, and begin to fulfill that dream.  Several years later, they  built their forever home in Aurora, MN, where they raised their five children.  Living immediately after the Great Depression instilled a sense of preservation that impacted the way she conducted her life. Having a large family, as well as clean eating & living, was important to Margie; her children and grandchildren can recall making homemade whole wheat bread, buying eggs from local farmers (even if the farmer lived an hour away), canning garden vegetables, and distilling water.  Her religious beliefs became a fundamental role in her worldview and a critical hope that these values were instilled in her children and grandchildren.

While raising children and running a household in the 1950's-70's, Margie held several part time jobs; one of these included being a rescue driver for abused women. Upon retirement, Margie and her husband traveled the country, following their passion for bluegrass music. Throughout retirement, she enjoyed traveling, giggling with girlfriends, playing cards, listening to music, enjoying a bowl of ice cream with a good movie, gardening, spending time with her family, and supporting the church to which she belonged.

Margie is survived by: daughters, Terese (Mark) Persson and Gail (Dennis) Heruth; grandchildren, Raina (John) Heruth, Isaac (Anna) Heruth, Marcus (Karissa) Persson, Jesse Heruth, David Menton, Thomas (Mandi) Heruth, Lacey (Vance) Keenan, Joshua (Kylie) Persson, Nathan Menton, and Katie Heruth; great-grandchildren, Tristan, Tianna, Jason, Haydn, Trista, Anthony, Jade, Taleah, Tyler, Tripp, Eathan, Hayden, Carsen, Kalen, Khylar, Cayden, Chloe, Sadee, Finn, and Zoe; one great-great grandchild, Brooks; many nieces, nephews, in-laws, and friends.

Although her surviving family and friends will grieve her absence, they also rejoice that Margie will finally be able to embrace her loved ones who preceded her: parents, Alice (Pratt) Seinola, John Custer, Ralph Seinola; brother, Wesley Custer; husband, Donald Menton; children, Michael Menton, David Menton, and Mark Menton; grandchildren, Shannon Persson and Cynthia Persson. The applause, overpowering love, and healing she received when first approaching her Heaven soothes the pain her survivors are experiencing; what a grand day for our precious Marjorie.
