Orville "Stub" Schultz
Orville John "Stub" Schultz, age 92 of Gheen, passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at Heritage Manor Health Care Center in Chisholm.
Stub was born on February 3, 1924, in Crosby, Minnesota, the son of John and Martha (Klepel) Schultz and grew up in Crow Wing County. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) prior to joining the U.S. Army. During War II he fought in most of the major campaigns in Central Europe, to include the Normandy invasion, the Ardennes, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Rhineland. After demobilization at the end of the War he returned to Minnesota where he married Helen Theone Parker on May 3, 1947, in St. Paul. After several years in southern Minnesota, the couple moved to the Ash River Trail in 1957 where Stub manned the Ash River Trail Fire Tower for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. He retired from the DNR in 1988. An ardent outdoorsman, avid trapper, hunter and fisherman, Stub was still canoeing in his 80's, and in recent weeks he was planning his next elk hunt in the west. Stub was a very skilled land surveyor, and through the years taught many Red Cross First Aid and Firearms Safety classes. Over the past 8 years he and his best friend Shirley Lund kept busy with several huge gardens, berry picking (they knew the best spots) and time in Florida during the winter. Stub will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Stub is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years Theone on January 14, 2006, and four brothers, Edward, Robert, John and Delbert Schultz.
He is survived by his 4 children, Lance (Lynn) Schultz of Manassas, VA, Linda (Bryan) Tobias of Roy, UT, Larry (Janiffer) Schultz of Alamagordo, NM, and Leon "Lucky" (Karin) Schultz of Grand Rapids, MN; his best friend and companion, Shirley Lund of Gheen, MN; 7 siblings, Elmer Schultz, Charles Schultz, Myrtle Arnold, Margaret Stuart, Marvin Schultz, Mae Kouba, and James Schultz, 12 Grandchildren, 26 Great Grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
