Patricia "Pat" Ulen
Patricia "Pat" J. Ulen ,84, Crane Lake, formerly of Hibbing, passed away on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.
She was born Patricia J. Knowlton on July 21, 1931 in Kenyon. It is in Kenyon where she grew up, went to school and married Clayton J. Ulen on May 11, 1951. The couple lived in Huntley and Fairmont before settling in Hibbing in 1962, where they raised their family. Pats' house was open and welcome to all the other children, many whom she affectionately called her "adopted family." Pat was devoted to her family.
Clayton was a Hibbing High School biology teacher for 21 years, including head of the high school science department for 7 years, retiring in 1982. They spent their summers at Crane Lake, where Pat worked as the head housekeeper at Nelson's Resort, and Clayton as a summer fishing guide. After retirement they permanently moved to Crane Lake, where they continued to make numerous lasting friendships. She enjoyed crafts, and putting jigsaw puzzles together, and liked to try her luck at the casinos. She was a great cook, and everyone who came over was treated to food to enjoy.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Clayton (August 15, 1989) and 2 brothers, Gene and Claire Knowlton.
Pat is survived by her 4 sons, Clifton (Blanca) Ulen of San Jose, Mexico, Charles "Chuck" (Vicky) Ulen of Keewatin, Curtis (Rebecca) Ulen of Oklahoma City, OK, Lance (Amy) Ulen of Buyck, MN; 1 daughter, Nancy Jean Ulen-Karter of Bloomington, MN; 1 sister, Dona Ronning of Kenyon; 9 Grandchildren, Gabriela Pedrin-Ulen, Alexandra Pedrin-Ulen, Tara (Barry) Olson, Lindsay (Jason) Fillman, Brian (Stephanie) Ulen, Bridget "Jena" Weiler, Jake Ulen, Kimberly (finance: Peter Busse) Thoen and Charles Karter; 9 Great Grandchildren; along with numerous other special relatives and friends.
SERVICES: Memorial services will be at 1:00 PM Thursday (Dec. 3rd) at the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Rev. Arthur Dale will be the officiant. A reception in Pats' honor will follow at the Cook VFW. Interment will be held at a later date at Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing.
