Obituary

Randall "Randy" John Fry passed away peacefully at St. Mary's Hospital on November 20, 2023. He was born in Cook, Mn. to Trenton (Buddy) and Ida Fry on June 23, 1944. He grew up in Orr, graduated from Orr High School, where he played basketball.

He worked for Pocrnich and Vukelich Contractors. He also worked for Gray Grilley and later on Olson Logging, where his handle was "Logroller".

He served in the National Guard from 1965 to 1971, stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. for basic training and later at Virginia National Guard Armory.

He married Mary Lou Vukelich (Lulu) on October 26, 1968 at Holy Cross Church in Orr. They lived in Bloomington, Mn. Randy worked at Roger's Hydraulics in St. Louis Pk, MN and did snow plowing on the side.  In May of 1972, they moved back to Orr to help his parents run Northland Lodge.  Randy enjoyed resort life for the next 51 years. He wanted to see the resort celebrate 100 years, which it did this summer.

Randy was a boy scout, member of Holy Cross Church, served on the Leiding Township Board, and a member of Pelican Lake Resort Association.

He was kind, gentle, friendly and made people smile. He was very witty with quick comebacks.

He enjoyed entertaining guests and island people at the lodge bar, enjoying adult beverages, telling stories, playing dice. He was an icon sitting in his favorite stool at the bar. He was the guy to go to for advice on fixing things. He could fix anything, take it apart and put it back together, a neighbor called him "Magic Fingers". He liked helping anybody who needed it by offering his vast collection of his tools and equipment, grader, trucks and Model A. He was notorious for his long shortcuts on road trips. He had a great love of animals, his pet deer, weasel, alligator, momma bear and his dogs.

He liked the outdoors doing a canoe trip with a guest friend from the dock at Northland Lodge to Crane Lake.  Spent a lot of time with his childhood friend, when growing up, Grover Gillespie in Virginia, or at his grandparent's island and as neighbors later.

He was preceded in death by his parents Bud and Ida Fry.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lulu, sister Suzanne Nelson (Cordell Hull), brother-in-law.

Tony Vukelich, nephew Jeff Nelson (Amy), grand nephews, Sam and Theo and grandniece Delaney. Cherished nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Randy will be dearly missed by so many people and resort guests but not forgotten.
