Roger C. Lappi
Roger Clark Lappi, 78, Cook, died Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at Essentia Health (St. Mary's Hospital) in Duluth. He passed away after a long and courageous battle with emphysema.
Roger was born on September 18, 1936 in Cook, the son of August and Irene (Kesanen) Lappi. He was a lifelong resident of Cook graduating from the Cook High School in 1956. He was a great athlete in high school and excelled in sports. He married Doris E. Falk on August 9, 1958 in Cook. Roger had worked road construction in his early years, and later was a longtime self-employed logger with his brothers Bob and Howard Lappi, operating as Lappi Bros. Logging. After retiring from logging, he worked as a grounds keeper at the Vermilion Fairways Golf Course. In the early years he was an avid hunter and fisherman. In retirement he and Doris spent several winters in Arizona.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his grandson, Zack Smith; 3 brothers: Leslie, Kenny and Vern Lappi; and 2 sisters, Viola Klemmer and Peggy Lappi.
Roger is survived by his wife of nearly 57 years Doris; 3 daughters: Carol (Tom) Skubic of Grand Junction, CO, Elayne Lappi of Virginia and Brenda (Jim) Koskovich of Angora; 4 brothers: Ron (Barb) Lappi of Casper, WY, Gary Lappi of Daytona Beach, FL, his twin brother Bob Lappi of Cook and Howard (Linda) Lappi of Cook; 3 sisters: Verona (Keith) Christianson of Alamosa, CO, Carolyn Lokken of Angora and Joan (Lowell) McDonald of Clearfield, PA; 7 grandchildren Paul Ranta and Tyler ( Katie) Ranta, Jared Smith, Jimmy Koskovich, Becky (Travis)Leinonen and Roger Koskovich; 5 great-grandchildren: Dylan, Kaija and Ile Leinonen, Michael and Margo Ranta, and one due in September, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
SERVICES: Memorial services will be at 11:00 am Thursday, June 18, 2015 at the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook. A gathering of family and friends will be one hour prior to the service. Pastor Liz Cheney will be the officiant. The honorary bearers will be Roger's grandchildren: Zack Smith (deceased), Jimmy Koskovich, Paul Ranta, Becky Leinonen, Roger Koskovich, Jared Smith and Tyler Ranta. A reception in Roger's honor will be held at the Cook VFW after the service. Interment will be held at a later date in the Field Township Cemetery.
