Sigrid Ojanen Kontio

Sigrid Ojanen Kontio, 96, of Cook, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2015 in St. Michael's Health Care Center, Virginia, where she had been a resident for the past two and one half years.

She was born at home in Alango Township on May 10, 1919 to Victor and Mary (Rantala) Ojanen. After completing 8th grade at Alango School, Sigrid worked as a domestic for families in the Alango area as well as in Duluth. In 1940, she returned to Alango and was employed as a cook for the teachers at Alango School. On Nov. 4, 1940, she married Arthur E. Kontio in a ceremony held at Swanson's Drug Store in Cook. Over the next 10 years, Siggie and Art lived in a variety of homes and locales as they started their family, which was to grow to six children. In 1950, they settled south of Cook, in a home the family built, where Sigrid was to live for the next 57 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur in 1993 and son, Arthur J. in 1971. She was the last of ten children and was preceded in death by siblings, Walfred Ojanen, Helen Heikkinen, Sylvia Brown, Esther Pohto, Helia Hakala, Elma Enzmann, Elsie Palmer, Arnold Ojanen and Raymond Ojanen.

Sigrid is survived by her children, Kathy (David) Stanton, Ann (John Berzins) Kontio, Larry (Penny Wile) Kontio, Sue (Jim) Porter and Brian (Jean Evens) Kontio; grandchildren Melissa Stanton, Jace Porter, Jesse Porter, Russell Kontio, Kaarin Kontio Evens, and Skyler Kontio; great-grandchild, Alex Porter and many nieces and nephews. Siggie was a beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She will be greatly missed by all.

Visitation will be Friday, from 1 until the 2 PM Memorial Service in Mlaker Funeral Home, Cook. Rev. Art Dale will officiate. Special music will be provided by violinist, Kaarin Kontio Evens, granddaughter. A reception in Siggie's honor will be in the fellowship hall in Trinity Lutheran Church. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Alango Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Mlaker Funeral Home of Cook.
