Obituary

Sylvia A. Makela Sylvia A. Makela, 88, passed away on October 22, 2026 and left behind a legacy defined by a passion for teaching and a deep love of her family and country. Whether she was in a classroom, behind the counter of a hardware store, or surrounded by her grandchildren, Sylvia believed in sharing knowledge, encouraging others, and taking seriously the responsibilities of family and citizenship.

A graduate of Butte High School, Sylvia continued her education at Western Montana College of Education, then at Moorhead State University, where she earned her teaching degree. Teaching was a calling that would remain at the heart of everything she did throughout her life.

After marrying F. Roger Makela, Sylvia and Roger moved to Cook, MN and operated Makela Hardware. Although Sylvia had stepped away from the traditional classroom, she never stopped being a teacher. At the hardware store, she continued to share her knowledge by answering questions, problem solving, and helping others learn.

Sylvia also took her responsibilities as an American citizen very seriously. Her patriotism was an important part of who she was. She understood that being an American meant more than simply enjoying the freedoms of this country; it meant taking an active interest in its future and recognizing the responsibility each citizen carries. Her love of country was a personal conviction that remained with her every day of her life.

One of Sylvia’s most cherished roles was that of grandmother. She was always teaching them and encouraging them in their education and in life. She wanted them to keep learning, to believe in themselves, and to approach the world with curiosity and confidence. Sylvia believed in providing opportunities for the next generation. Upon Sylvia’s passing, she made one final, meaningful contribution through her decision to donate her body and organs to science. Even in death, she offered the possibility of helping others and advancing medical knowledge.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, Roger; her son, Kirk; her son-in-law, Todd; her brother, John; her mother, Lydia; her father, William; and her stepfather, Wallace. Her legacy lives on with her daughter, Kandi, and her grandchildren, Tate, Nicole, and Victoria.

A private family gathering will be held in lieu of a public service. Sylvia will be interred with Roger at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Duluth, MN.
