Walter Phillip Hopkins, 84, of Cook, MN (and Lake in The Hills, Illinois), passed away on Monday, January 1, 2024. Walter was born in Princeton, IL on July 25, 1939 to Edwin and Barbara (Fauble) Hopkins.
Walt Hopkins, a proud third-generation Hopkins born in Princeton, Illinois, peacefully passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service. Born with a passion for learning, Walt pursued higher education at the University of Illinois, completing his academic journey with a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the Forest Institute of Professional Psychology. This educational background laid the foundation for a life filled with diverse experiences and a deep understanding of the human spirit.
Walt's commitment to his country was unwavering, evident in his service as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, where he demonstrated bravery and honor. Following his military service, Walt seamlessly transitioned into the family business, Hopkins Grain and Lumber, playing a significant role in its success. Later in his career, he ventured into the world of finance, becoming a respected stockbroker with Dean Witter.
Even in retirement, Walt continued to be a beacon of inspiration for those around him. His love for education and community led him to work as a substitute teacher at local schools, sharing his knowledge and passion with the next generation and leaving an indelible mark on countless lives.
Walt's diverse interests included a deep passion for jazz, photography, and spirituality. He found solace and joy in the melodies of jazz, the art of capturing moments through photography, and exploring the depths of spirituality.
One of Walt's greatest joys was the time he spent at the cabin on Elbow Lake during the summers. Surrounded by family and friends, he cherished these moments, creating lasting memories filled with laughter, warmth, and love.
Walt will be remembered for his unwavering dedication, his love for family and friends, and the positive impact he made on the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. As we mourn his passing, let us celebrate the rich tapestry of Walt's life and the indelible mark he leaves on our hearts.
Walter is survived by his son David (Kristy) Hopkins and his grandchildren: Emily and Eli; sister Pamela (Paul) Hopkins Friesen and his nieces Suzanne Friesen and Andrea (Daniel) Friesen Drinkard, and great niece and nephew: Noelle and Cameron Drinkard. Life Partner Roberta Work and Walter's bonus son: David (Pegalaina) Work and grandchildren: Alexis (Jase) Marcelo and great-grandchildren: Atreyu Marcelo Aralyn Marcelo; David (Melissa) Work II and great-grandson David Work III, Steven (Caitie) Work, and great-grandson Anakin Work.
